Service the engine and gear box
thoroughly once a year at least ,
check with your engine
manufacture on the schedule of
works they would suggest and the
best products to use.
This area in many boats is over
looked and without it you go no
where fast. check all baring's, glands,
stuffing box's cutlass baring's,
shafts, legs and props for wear
and corrosion. Grease lubricate
and service all moving parts. Check
for corrosion and check all anodes
are replaced regularly
Check for electrolytic damage
regularly ,damage and water
tightness, Grease and lubricate
at lest ones a year. If you are
are not sure about your
skin fittings and sea cocks
replace them. A few hundred
pounds spent now could stop
your boat from sinking and
passable loss of life.
Remove mast/take it down at
least every 2 or 3 years, so
the standing rigging, running
rigging, halyard sheaves, rivets,
bolts, wiring, lights, spreaders,
corrosion and any damage can
be inspected and rectified .
Remove and replace all bulbs
they don't cost much, when you
are about it check all wiring
connections, you can then
protect them with a suitable
wiring protector, most
chandlery's will stock just what
you need to apply or spray on
Check for corrosion , and that they are well secured and not damaged,
grease winches, check for stress
cracking around deck area where
they are fitted and repair if needed ,
I feel this should be done
once a year
A good old tap with a hammer can
often tell if a bolt or fixing has
deteriorated. However for bolt on
ballast Keels that will not work as
the sound will be muffled by the keel.
check for ingress of water and keep
your bilges panted dry and clean. If
you are not sure get us to have a look.
7) Keel bolts and
Underwater fixings
Keep the steering gear greased
and lubricated. Look for wear
In any of the cables, pulleys,
Chans, tillers, bearings and
check for corrosion and
electrolytic damage.
Keep an eye on them, replace them often, make sure they are bonded
correctly and any wiring is in good order, There is no point having anodes
If the bonding or wiring is not working. This can be tested with a continuity
Meter .
10) Hull structure
bulk heads and structure
bonding or fixings
This is a big big subject but in brief keep a good eye on your boat for any
deterioration in her Structural parts and a good place to start is in the bilges
around the mast step, Keel bolts, bulk heads, ribs, floors, supports and the like
look for any rot, grp damage, cracks and water ingress that should not be
there. Osmosis , delaminating, soft areas, damage and stress cracking.
However if you are really not happy about doing this and are not
sure what to look for then let us have a look for you or a Surveyor. I do believe
having your boat checked over or surveyed every so often is a must.
